Photobiomodulation

Low-level laser light with Dr Reece Yeo, Integrative Chinese Medicine Practitioner. A needle-free option, explained as he goes.

Part of Reece's Resilience Medicine approach.

What is photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation is low-level (Class 3B) laser light applied to the skin, including at acupuncture points, without needles.

When the laser is aimed at acupuncture points, it's sometimes called laser acupuncture. Reece calls the treatment photobiomodulation because he uses the laser on other areas as well as acupuncture points.

Reece's training

Reece holds a Laser Safety Certificate from the Australian Medical Photobiomodulation Association (AMPA), and he's a member of AMPA. He's registered with AHPRA as a Chinese medicine practitioner (CMR0001952522) and is a member of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA).

How Reece uses it

Reece chooses where to apply the laser after talking with you and examining you, in the same way he chooses acupuncture points. He uses it when needed in any type of consultation, alongside acupuncture or moxibustion, or in place of needles if you'd rather not have them. It isn't booked on its own.

It's one of several treatments Reece uses without needles, along with moxibustion, acupressure and gua sha.

What a session is like

Every treatment starts with a conversation and an examination. Reece explains what he's going to do and why, and you can ask questions at any point. Protective eyewear is used. Most people feel little or nothing, and some notice mild warmth.

Before your first treatment, you'll answer a few health questions so Reece can treat you safely. If anything needs extra care, he'll talk it through with you before going ahead, and in some cases he may suggest a different treatment.

Questions about photobiomodulation

Does photobiomodulation use needles?

No. The laser light is applied to the skin, including at acupuncture points, without needles. If you're not keen on needles, let Reece know when you book.

Is it the same as laser acupuncture?

Laser acupuncture is the name often used when the laser is aimed at acupuncture points. Reece uses the wider name, photobiomodulation, because he also uses the laser on other areas.

Can I book photobiomodulation on its own?

No. Reece uses it when needed as part of your consultation, whichever type of consultation you book.
